ASTM F1140 / F1140M - 13 Standard To Evaluate The Burst Strength

This ASTM F1140 / F1140M - 13 Standard test method includes the procedure to determine the minimum bursting strength of a seal used in flexible packaging. The packages are internally pressurized and are enclosed within restraining plates. The test method determines the ability of the packages to tolerate the pressurization stresses. However, stresses are not uniformly distributed in all areas of the seal. When the conditions are not strained, there is the highest pressure at the middle of the pouch and inflates the maximum diameter. The test method may not detect the weakest area.

During the test, the pressure is increased internally until package seal around the perimeter bursts open. The package is placed on restraining plates, and the dimensional stability is maintained so that stress can be applied uniformly. The test method allows to detect the weakest area of the seal and proves the pressure value required to burst open the package or sealed box.

The test method is applicable to the flexible packaging only like a pouch and is suitable for peelable seal failure.

Presto’s Bursting Strength Tester measures the strength of paper boards, corrugated boards, paper, boxes, solid fiber boards, industrial fabric, leather, etc. The hydrostatic force is applied to rupture the sample material. The pressure is used at a controlled increasing rate through a rubber diaphragm. The bursting strength evaluates the maximum weight carried by the packaging box. The instrument has significant use in paper and packaging industries to determine the quality of the material used.

The chamber is ideal for accelerated corrosion tests and replicating or simulating the other extremely corrosive conditions and is made of using non-metallic materials.
